Using a small square to insure that you get the drill flat, grind the end off the drill until you have a full diameter, then back off both sides so the drill has relief. You then grind a slight positive rake, enough to move the cutting edge to the center of the web, half from each flute. That operation is necessary if you expect the drill to be ...
Grinding a lathe cutting tool is similar in concept to grinding the cutting edge of a chisel and that is the entire point of this post. Chisels are ground with more relief than absolutely required because they are free-hand guided and therefore need angular adjustment of around +/- 15 degrees for flexibility of purpose.
grinding machines. The average machinist will be concerned mostly with floor-mounted and bench-mounted utility grinding machines, bufting machines. and reciprocating surface grinding machines. UTILITY GRINDING MACHINES The utility grinding machine is intended for offhand grinding where the workpiece is supported in the hand and
Be really careful grinding the secondary relief as there isn't much meat holding the fixture to the chuck. I've had it move screwing up the end mill, the grinding wheel and dinging the chuck. I now block the fixture in and put a piece of masonite on my chuck to the left of the fixture to protect it in case the fixture comes loose.
To investigate effective fabrication of a micro ball-end mill with different relief angles, this paper proposes a practical grinding method for the relief face validated by a grinding experiment, in which micro ball-end mills with relief angles of 10°, 20°, and 30° are fabricated.

To resharpen endmills or not. Just picked up about 200lbs of US made endmills for pretty much free at a shop liquidation, everything from 1/4" up to 1.5" 2,4 flute, square, radius and ball-nosed, some carbide, mostly HSS and cobalt. 1/3 of them are brand new, and the other 2/3 range from slightly dull to abused and blue.
3 flutes is the sweet spot for solid carbide endmills 98% of the time. Chip clearance is the name of the game for aluminum, and 3 flutes give you that perfect balance of tool strength and chip clearance. 2 flutes can be a viable option where cutting forces are lower and chip clearances are more of a factor.

Water-base fluids are preferred in high-speed turning, milling, and grinding because of their greater cooling effect. These may be soluble oils or chemical solutions. Except for grinding, which depends almost entirely on cooling and flushing, some chemical activity is always desired and is generally provided by chlorine, amines, or other chemicals.
Endmill with more flutes. Modern high efficiency milling (HEM) toolpaths that are available with current software lend themselves to more endmill flutes. Metal removal rates and tool life can be increased by taking advantage of faster, light radial depth of cut toolpaths with endmills that have 7-9 flutes. Drill with replaceable tips.
