A slow helix end mill will allow for larger chip formation, increased tool strength and reduce lifting forces. However, it may not leave an excellent finish. A high helix end mill will allow for efficient chip evacuation and excellent part finish, but may be subject to increased deflection, which can lead to tool breakage if not properly managed.
In this paper, end milling experiments on aluminum alloy 2024-T351 were carried out to study the influence of end mill geometry on milling force and surface integrity of the machined parts. Machining using a 16-mm-diameter tool having a helix angle of 35° produced high force value and also generated chatter marks on the machined work surface.
The basic edge shapes of end mills (helix groove shapes) are straight and helix. The helix angle can be divided into 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 50 degrees, and so on. Compared with a straight edge, helix edge end milling cutter has the advantages of light cutting, smooth cutting, high efficiency and wide application range, so it has been widely used in milling.

The basic edge shapes of carbide end mills has two types: straight shape and spiral shape. The helix angle can be divided into 30°, 45°, 50°, etc., and there are various types. Compared with the straight edge, the spiral edge end mill has the advantages of light cutting, smooth cutting, high efficiency and wide application range, so it has been widely used in milling processing.
High-Speed Performance Milling 1 (HSPM1) HSPM1 series milling cutters feature unequal flute spacing (variable pitch) to reduce or eliminate unwanted harmonic vibrations, commonly known as chatter. The 4-flute end mills feature a 38° helix angle on the flute geometry and chamfers on the cutting edges to guard against chipping and premature wear of the edges in roughing applications.
Helix angle. The helix angle is the angle that an end mill's helical cutting edge makes with the plane of its centreline. On the periphery, the helix angle is the axial rake angle of the peripheral cutting edges. A higher helix angle means a larger rake angle, thereby increasing sharpness to the tool. - …
The results of experimental research on the influence of the helix angle on high performance milling of AlZn5.5MgCu alloy are presented. End mills with a wavy shape of a cutting edge, dedicated to rough high performance machining, were used. The helix angle was changed in the range of 20° to 50° with a step of 5°. During the milling tests, three cutting force components were …
Clearance: Secondary (2nd angle 14 – 17 degrees) – Relief adjacent to the cutting edge. Clearance: Tertiary ( 3rd) – Additional relief clearance provided adjacent to the secondary angle. Concave – Small hollow required on the end face of an Endmill. This feature is produced by a …
Helix Angle – The helix angle measures the upward slope of a flute's cutting edge. This angle can be found by looking at a tangent of a flute's edge and measuring the angle against the central axis of the end mill. Variable Flute End Mills Normally the pitch between every flute is identical, but the exception is variable flute end mills ...
Ball end mills, also known as ball nose end mills, are used for milling contoured surfaces, slotting and pocketing. A ball end mill is constructed of a round cutting edge and used in the machining of dies and molds. Roughing end mills, also known as hog mills, are used to quickly remove large amounts of material during heavier operations.
1. Rotary end mills cut side to side or in the horizontal direction, lots of mills can cut both axially and laterally, while drill bits that plunged directly into the material only move up and down and cut in vertically. 2. End mills are versatile milling cutters used to machine slots, profile, cavities, and more features, a drill bit is used ...
Another consideration is the helix angle of an end mill. It is generally accepted that a 30°. angle is industry standard for sharpness and cutting edge strength. This is adequate for carbon steels, some tool steels or even light finishing passes in aluminum. However, when machining stainless steels, a …

A high helix angle, generally around 45 degrees is also desirable. The helix helps move chips up and out of the cutting zone and also generates an excellent surface finish. The angle also helps soften the impact at entrance of cut, resulting in a smoother, quieter cut (see Figure 1).. For aluminum milling a two- or three-flute end mill works best because this allows for larger flute areas.
Hi-helix end mills have several advantages inherited with their design. Simple math says that a an endmill with 45 degree helix angle directs 50% of the cutting force downward versus 25% for a 30 degree end mill. Main advantages are: Higher rake angle directs more of a cutting force downward. This reduces side load on the cutter, that leads to ...
With a wear-resistant coating and high helix angle, these end mills provide excellent shearing and chip removal in stainless steel and titanium. Often used for slotting and pocketing cuts in mold and die making, these end mills have a 90° profile and rounded corners, which reduce flute breakage and chipping.
Standard end mills are offered with helix angles as low as 15° to as high as 60° angles. General-purpose end mills are generally around 30°. Any increase in the helix angle increases the effective shearing action thus reducing cutting forces and the amount of …
End Mill Side Clearance • Primary (1st angle, 5°- 9°) – Relief Adjacent to Cutting Edge • Secondary (2nd angle, 14°-17°) – Relief Adjacent to Primary Angle • Tertiary (3rd) – Additional Relief Provided Adjacent to the Secondary – High Performance End Mills
The Nitty-Gritty of End Mills. If you're designing a custom end mill for a specific material, you want to choose your helix angle with that in mind. 30° to 45° degree helix angles can handle hard metals, while you might choose around 37-38 degrees for aluminum. 60° tools are excellent for plastics.
Helix angles generally come as low as 12° to as high as 60°. Most general purpose end mills use between a 25° and 30° angle where basic sharpness and cutting edge strength is maintained. Increasing the helix angle improves stock removal and is useful in machining at increased speeds and feeds.
Other CNC End Mill Design Details. Helix Angles You don't need to worry about this too much except to keep in mind that the best range for cutting wood are considered low helix when compared to metal cutting bits: 22° to less than 30°. There are exceptions at both ends, but for the most part, cutters intended for our use are within that range.
Roughing / Finishing End Mills. The Triple Threat™ tool is a multi-patented three flute high performance carbide end mill designed to finish and rough in aluminum and non-ferrous metals. The high shear, 45 degree helix and improved inter-flute geometries enhanced chip evacuation and permit increased chip loads as well as aggressive feed rates.
Helix angle. General-purpose end mills typically have helix angles around 30°. Increasing the helix angle will reduce the cutting forces and the amount of heat and vibration generated during the milling process. Hence, end mills with a higher helix angle tend to produce a …
End Mill Helix Angle. The helix angle of a tool is measured by the angle formed between the centerline of the tool and a straight line tangent along the cutting edge. A higher helix angle used for finishing (45°, for example) wraps around the tool faster and makes for a more aggressive cut.
The helix angle is based on the idea that the endmill will achieve the depth of cut specified in one rotation. So, if we need to helix down 1″, and we specified a 1/4″ DOC as we did for this example, it will take 4 rotations at these feeds and speeds to get to the bottom of …

Milling cutters may have from one to many teeth, with 2, 3 and 4 being most common. Typically, the more teeth a cutter has, the more rapidly it can remove material. So, a 4-tooth cutter can remove material at twice the rate of a 2-tooth cutter. Helix angle: The flutes of a milling cutter are almost always helical.
