A small mill is one of the most valuable tools you'll have on a homestead IF you have timber, or can get somebody to bring/sell/give it to you (done all 3 also). The HF mill will probably cut in the 300-500bdft range per day, more due to everything on it being manual (blade up/down, carriage drive, etc) That ain't bad.

Few years later I got Mini Mill from Harbor Freight - a variation of Sieg X2 mill. These two machines are very good when tuned well. I was able to achieve the precision of 0.001inch what is enough for my needs. When the mill arrived to my shop it was mostly assembled but I decides to take it apart, clean, lubricate and adjust the way I wanted.

The mill has been on backorder for several months and is now listed at $2000 vs the $1700 previously. According to an email from HF customer service, the mill is supposed to become available again this month. Run times can be as long as four to six hours using milling bits as small as 0.003 tip diameter. Outstanding accuracy and repeatability. My first Taig mill has been in operation since May, 2005 (12+ years) and maintains the same quality as my newer mill. Here is a link where I assembled the first mill when new.
