Stock Inletting In A Mill

I have a stock set coming for my Ballard No.3 project and the carver was unable to cut the barrel channel to size. He is giving me a half inch guide cut, but getting it to fit my octagonal barrel (+/- .900 across the flats) is up to me.

What is the difference in basic inletting and fully inletted? Also, how hard is it to inlet a flat top stock using a mill? I am looking at getting a McMillan Tooley MBR for a 6mmbr build. My cousin has a mill I can use and not sure if I should special order a stock from McMillan, buy a flat top from brunos, or get a basic inlet from brunos.

All the stock inletting is done on a mill, not in the duplicator. By doing so we can assure you of the most accurate inlet possible. No sloppy barreled actions in our stock inlet. We also offer custom inletting. This allows us to inlet already completed stocks to accomodate pillar(s), rails, larger barrel diameters, etc.

The best thing to do is select a piece of scrap wood cut off your stock blank and clamp it in a vise. Then use a Mill Bastard file to generate the proper size dust particles. I have tried larger dust particles but they are hard to work down into smaller gaps. You can place some card stock behind your scrap wood to collect the dust.
